Things in Your Environment That Could Cause Hay Fever This Summer

Hay Fever-it may sound scary because of the name, but it’s actually very common. How common? There are reportedly more than 3 million cases in the US per year. If you have never heard of it though, you may be wondering how it’s so common. It is defined as “an allergy caused by pollen or dust in which the mucous membranes of the eyes and nose are itchy and inflamed, causing a runny nose and watery eyes.” Probably sounds familiar to many of you reading this, doesn’t it? After all, if you are on this site, you are most likely seeking expert help for sinus or allergy problems. Simply put, this is another term for the allergies that you may have been dealing with for the past season… or longer. It can lead to congestion and annoying sinus pressure, so if you have it, you are definitely looking for a way to get rid of it.

Memorial Day is now behind us, which is what many people have come to look at as the unofficial start to summer (among other things, of course). Unfortunately, as much as we know you would like to focus solely on fun things, there are a good deal of things in your environment that could cause hay fever this summer. As you may have noticed recently, those big barbeques might be contributing. The already obvious irritants of the outdoors (pollen, spores from fungi, etc.) pair up with smoke to potentially set off someone’s eyes and/or nose. Virtually any airborne substance can trigger allergies in someone who is very sensitive, but the smoke from that grill of yours can be quite thick and rather intense at times. Some people can only stand around it for very short periods of time before they start tearing, feeling itchy, or even experiencing strained breathing.

There are a few things you can do about this. You are probably not going to want to stop barbequing or spending time outdoors, so consider coming indoors to see us. We know about all the top things in your environment that could cause hay fever this summer and precisely how to deal with allergy and sinus issues. If it’s not you that is having these problems, just be mindful of your friend that seems to be having difficulties. Better yet, refer them to us for their chance at permanent relief!
